Specimen Requirements

For outpatients, call Missouri Baptist Medical Center Customer Service and ask for Phlebotomy Supervisor.  This is to coordinate when the patient comes in and confirm supplies are in place upon arrival.

 

Specimen Type: Plasma
Container/Tube: Mint-green top (lithium heparin gel)
Specimen Volume: Full tube
Specimen Minimum Volume: 0.25 mL
Collection Instructions:

1. Obtain lactose from Core Laboratory.

2. Have patient ingest 50 grams of lactose.

3. Draw blood at 15-, 30-, 60-, and 90-minutes post ingestion.

Additional Information: Label specimens appropriately (corresponding draw times).

Reference Values

Normal: ≥20 to 30 mg/dL increase in glucose level over fasting level

Intolerant:

Critical values (automatic call-back)

Infants: 300 mg/dL

Adults: 500 mg/dL
