Light Microscopy

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Pelvic washing, pericardial, peritoneal, pleural fluid

Container/Tube: Container with CytoRich Red Collection Fluid or Sterile container

Specimen Volume: Entire specimen

Collection Instructions:

1. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date of birth, medical record number, date of collection, and type of specimen. Patient’s chart label may replace the name, date of birth, and medical record number.

2. Specimen type and clinical data are required.

Forms: Cytology Requisition in Request Forms in Special Instructions.

3. Preservative:  If submitted in CytoRich Red, equal volume of cytorich red should be added to specimen volume.  If fixative is added to specimen, it should be documented in orders and on container.
