Methodology

Dipstick: Spectrophotometric reflectance of light on color reagent pads

Urine color: Spectrophotometry or visual observation

Specific gravity: Refractometry

Clarity: Measurement of the transmission and scatter of light

Testing Algorithm

Testing includes: color, clarity, specific gravity, pH, protein, glucose, ketones, bilirubin, blood, urobilinogen, nitrites, and leukocyte esterase.

 

Urine microscopics will be performed on any urine with a routine Urinalysis that meets one or more of the following criteria:

  1. Leukocyte Esterase: Trace or greater
  2. Nitrite:  any positive result
  3. Protein:  1+ or greater
  4. Blood:  Trace or greater  

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Urine, random

Container/Tube:  Yellow UA Preservative Tube

Specimen Volume: Full tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 4 mL

Alternative Container/ Tube: Sterile Cup (see Stability below)

Alternative Specimen Volume:  minimum10 mL
