Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Bronchial Alveolar lavage fluid, Bronchial wash, sputum, or tracheal aspirate.
Container: SUBMIT ONLY 1 OF THE FOLLOWING SPECIMENS based on clinical presentation of symptoms
Bronchial Alveolar Lavage (BAL), Bronch Wash, Sputum, or Tracheal Aspirate
- Aseptically collect 1.0 mL of specimen.
- Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.
- Label transport container with 2 patient identifiers and with date and time of collection.
- Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
- If transport time will exceed 4 hours, specimen should be transported with cold/ice pack.
Specimen Transport Temperature
If specimen will be in transit >4 hours, it should be transported with a cold pack. Specimen may be held at 2-8° for up to 3 days or at <15° for up to 30 days.
