Test Code LAB264 (FGEN) Mold (fungal) culture, Bone Marrow

Important Note

MBMC will send to BJH and they will forward to Mayo Medical Lab.

Performing Laboratory

Mayo Clinical Laboratory

Methodology

Specimens are cultured on selective fungal media (eg, inhibitory mold agar and brain heart infusion blood agar with chloramphenicol and gentamicin). Respiratory sources also are cultured on brain heart infusion agar with chloramphenicol, gentamicin, and cycloheximide. Cultures are incubated for 24 days at 30° C.

Identification of fungi is based on colonial and microscopic morphology, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry, laboratory-developed real-time polymerase chain reaction assays and/or D2 ribosomal RNA gene sequencing, as applicable.

Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

> 3mL of bone marrow collected in green top lithium heparin tube.

Collection Procedure:
1. Disinfect lithium heparin tube stopper with alcohol prep pad. Let dry completely.
2. Aseptically collect > 3mL of bone marrow into lithium heparin tube.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
