Specimen Requirements
Acceptable Specimens:
> 0.5 mL or 0.5 g of fresh stool in a leak-proof screw-capped, sterile container.
Patient Preparation:
To avoid false negative results, it is recommended that antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or bismuth preparations be discontinued for 14 days prior to specimen collection.
Collection Procedure:
1. Collect 0.5 mL or 0.5 g of fresh liquid stool or fresh soft stool.
2. Place specimen in a leak-proof screw-capped, sterile container. (Stool in container with preservatives is not acceptable).
3. Maintain sterility and transport promptly to laboratory.
4. If transport is delayed, refrigerate specimen at 2-8 C. Specimen must be received within 24 hours of collection.
Test Limitations
1. Stool collected in any container that contains transport media, swabs, or preservatives is unacceptable and will be rejected.
2. Specimen should not be collected following a barium enema, colonic wash, laxative ingestion, or bowel preparation.
3. Antimicrobials, proton pump inhibitors, and bismuth preparations are know to supress H. pylori and ingestion of these prior to H. pylori testing may give a false negative result if ingested within two weeks prior to testing. A positive result for a patient ingesting these compounds within two weeks prior to performing test should be considered accurate.
